Expanding the Electorate through Citizenship

Citizenship_Committee.jpgOCCORD's Citizenship Program helps Lawful Permanent Residents become U.S. Citizens, providing legal advice, assistance with the application form and fee waiver, educational materials, and citizenship classes free of charge. We encourage new citizens to become civically engaged through voting, activism, and volunteering.

Immigrants are a key part of Orange County's economic and social fabric. Almost a third of Orange County's three million residents are immigrants. For those who are eligible, U.S. citizenship can provide better economic opportunity and social benefits. Most importantly, U.S. citizens gain the right to vote in elections, and the ability to become part of the democratic process, ensuring that politicians and public policy are responsive to the entire population of Orange County.
